Scholarships and Opportunities

Currently, there are opportunities provided for people to get an equal chance as those privileged enough to pay for it. Notable of these are institutions for higher education. The fact that access to quality education is dependent on one’s financial strength sounds very unequal to say the least. Looking at this through the lens of the “have-nots”, the already privileged “haves”, by virtue of the availability of funds, have endless opportunities laid out in front of them, while those who desire to attain such standards by going through high rated institutions are maligned with the problem of inadequate funds. As a result, their potential to exhibit their mental capacity and prowess is never brought to light. This is why several organizations have put themselves out there to bridge this inequality.

One such organization is the Mastercard Foundation Scholarship Program. The Mastercard Foundation seeks a world where all have the opportunity to learn and prosper. Their focus is helping economically disadvantaged young people in Africa find opportunities to move themselves from poverty to a better life. Because of Mastercard’s vision, they have established relationships with top universities in Africa and beyond like Ashesi University in Ghana and Carnegie Mellon University in Rwanda among others.

Another scholarship providing organization is the African Presidential Fellowship Program at the University of Michigan, USA. This program offers the opportunity for faculty and students in some selected African countries like Ghana, Liberia, South Africa and Uganda to collaborate with faculty and students in the University of Michigan during their residencies. Some of the fields of collaboration include Africa Heritage, African Social Research and STEM(Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). With this collaboration, the students from Africa have access to the University of Michigan’s library and research materials.

Aside from these, there are a plethora of scholarships and opportunities that are geared towards raising the unfortunate African from a disadvantaged position to a place of open doors.
